There have only been just over 40 professional football players who have continued to play after reaching the age of 40. Football is one of the few sports where the players usually quit playing while they’re still in their 30s, and possibly even younger if they’re seriously injured. There are several reasons why these pro players retire so young. Since football is such a physical sport, it is quite normal for NFL players to attain some type of injury on a regular basis. These injuries vary in seriousness from simple bruises or sprains, to more serious injuries such as dislocations, breaks, etc. Some players simply tire of incurring these ‘poundings’ and choose to leave. The body can only take so much abuse, and it’s a fact that the older they get, the more likely they are to be seriously hurt.

The body is less resilient at thirty-eight than at twenty-two. Others may wish to pursue other career options, and possibly even play another sport.

But just how old is too old to play pro football? Who decides when they should retire? These are some really good questions, because every person is different. One player may be in better physical shape at forty-two than another is at thirty-two. A twenty-seven-year-old may have gotten hurt severely enough to be forced to end his career before he’s even thirty.

George Blanda holds the record for being the oldest NFL player, choosing to retire one month prior to his forty-ninth birthday. Most of the time a player makes the decision of when he wants to discontinue playing professional football. Sometimes, though, it may be recommended by their physician or some other person whose opinion matters. As long as a football player is healthy and in shape, as well as able to pass the countless physical agility tests and examinations, then he can leave it up to his own body to tell him when it’s time call it quits.

Some football players are especially fragile, and may have a history of sustaining multiple injuries. If these fragile players decide to leave one team and join another one, they may be forced to retire. The new team will not sign a player, no matter how good they are, if they are not 100%.

So, ultimately, it’s up to each individual player and his experiences to decide when it will be time to retire from the NFL.

Fifteen years ago, my friends and I wanted to get involved in fantasy sports. We had heard of Rotisserie baseball, the game where you select major leaguers and use their statistics for your own fantasy team. Most of us preferred football over baseball, so we did a little research and decided to create a fantasy football league. Now, we’re entering our 16th season, with 20 of the most rabid football nuts anywhere, competing for pride and a small monetary prize each year.

We’re not alone, of course. Over 15 million Americans play fantasy football, a game that uses the statistics of professional football players for personal, fantasy teams. During the last decade, this game has erupted, like a volcano. There are hundreds of web sites, dedicated to it. Magazines litter the newsstands in June and July, all dedicated to providing the best information possible about players from the National Football League, as well as offering “expert” prognostication as to which players will benefit your fantasy team the most, based on their performances on the gridiron each Sunday. There are even radio and TV shows, dedicated to discussion of fantasy football and the NFL players that dot each team’s roster.

If you know someone who loves NFL football, chances are he or she is part of a fantasy football league. My own participation has initiated a new experience. As a writer, I’m always looking for a new idea, something unique, and fantasy football has given it to me. A work of fiction. For years, while I was busy writing how-to books and articles, I dreamed, as most authors do, of writing the great American novel. When that didn’t come, I just wanted something different; something I thought would interest a large audience.

One thing that NFL players must keep in mind is that when they sign that large contract to play for the National Football League, they in a way agree to allow the public to know all of their personal business. Of course the player may not even think about this, or may feel that maybe the public wouldn’t be interested in his personal business, but if he feels this way, then he’s sadly mistaken.

NFL players all have many loyal fans. Some fans work hard to find out every thing there is to know about that particular player. They read gossip magazines, look through numerous websites, and some even look for chances to go through the player’s trash at the player’s home. This may be pretty meddlesome as well as a little obsessive, but unfortunately, many people become this way. Even some of the gossip magazine employees will go through the player’s trash, looking for even meaningless things to publicize and misconstrue to the public. This is a very unfortunate and negative part of becoming an NFL player. Fortunately, most of the pro ball players are able to completely prevent this type of thing from happening.

What professional football players can’t avoid, unfortunately, is that when something does happen in their private lives, it will become public news. Even if the player works very hard to keep the news under wraps, it will eventually find a way of leaking out. Some news, such as engagements, weddings or the birth of a child may be the type of news that NFL players don’t mind the public knowing. They may even report it directly to the news/magazines them selves, because they are proud.

Much to NFL players’ dismay, if they happen to be arrested, get a divorce, or are involved in something else negative, the media will literally go nuts trying to get all the details of the incident so they can immediately report it to the public. This can cause anger, frustration, and especially embarrassment. These types of incidents are very painful and personal, and it only intensifies that pain when the media starts publicizing all of their affairs.

NFL players may not like having their private affairs publicized, but once they agree to become ’sports celebrities’, they are silently agreeing that it’s okay for this to happen.

In every sport, there will be always a discipline, which you need to be instilled in yourself. There will be this certain kind of commitment to develop oneself for the betterment. It takes a lot to be a professional athlete. No one would want to hire someone who is not ready to face the best of the best in every state.

Everyone, who dreams to be the next Joe Montana, Dan Marino or Jerry Rise, should better start gearing up themselves and do what the professionals do. Below are some of the tips:

Love the Game

The eagerness to learn will come from your passion for the game. No one would want to play a sport that one person does not know about. Watch as much football as you can to see how your favorite team does. Live the football spirit and support your own local team. Those who do well in this field love the game so much that they will not miss it for the world.

Know the Game

There is no loving football, when you do not know how the game is played or what terms are being used in the field. You cannot learn all the moves needed if you do not even know what it is called. You will not be a fanatic of this game if you do not know what causes the team to win and what you are cheering for in the game.

Get a Good Education

Philadelphia Eagles, Kentucky Wildcats or Mississippi Bulldogs are just a few of the College football teams existing. If you start to compete in your early years, get into an institution and work your way up to college. This is were the pros usually pick up their teams. All of the professional football player got to play for the NFL through drafts from the different colleges in different states. Therefore, if you think you can ditch college to play with the pros, think again.

Get into Shape

You cannot play football if you do not have the body of a football player. In the game, you need to sturdy and strong. You do not want to be crushed by men who are over 200 pounds heavy. To get into shape, you need to have strength training, muscle building and cardio exercises. Muscle and strength are two important factors to withstand the rigidity of the game. Cardio exercises help you to endure all the running that is needed. You also have to be agile. You also need to have a quick mind. In football, things can happen within seconds, so you really need to think fast but surely in your moves.

If you want to be playing for the Giants, Patriots or Falcons, then start playing with college football teams like Philadelphia Eagles. However, there are also qualifications in getting into colleges. Of course, you need to be playing football in your high school years while possessing all of the mentioned above. Not to mention they also need to qualify you to see if you have the qualities of their players or better.

Everybody knows that football is a physically intensive sport. It is anticipated that football players are ready to lunge into another player mercilessly while striving for that extra foot. With the physical stress every player has to sustain in every game, it is necessary that he is equipped with appropriate padded gear that is specifically made for this sport. Protective equipment in football is categorized into three, namely: head protection, body protection and leg protection.

Head protective gears are vital to protect the head from concussions and head bumps. There is always a danger of physical injury in this sport that can cause permanent brain damage. Therefore, using helmets and other head accessories are important.

In professional football, official NFL helmets are designed to protect the head of football players. These helmets protect the cranium from impact. It is made out of non-breakable plastic with a foam interior and a face guard in front. The mouth piece which is part of the head gear forms into the mouth when the player bites on it. It protects the player’s mouth and teeth. On the other hand, the jaw pads are placed in the lining of the helmet protecting the jaw from sharp hits leading to dislocation. The chin strap is fastened firmly on the side of the helmet to keep it from falling off.

In protecting the body during football, concerns are mostly on intestinal damage and fracture of the ribs and scapula. Essential gears used are shoulder pads, rib pads, neck rolls, elbow pads and shock pads. The shoulder pads are bulky and protect the scapula, ribs and chest. Rib pads are worn under the shoulder pads and are primarily for rib protection. But usually some are made to protect the lower back. The neck roll and rib pads are built into the shoulder pads. Under the shoulder pads is the shock pads. These provide extra cushioning and comfortability for the player.

In football, maneuverability is significant so leg protection is bare. The three important pieces that complete leg protection includes the football cleats, knee pads and the hip pads. Football cleats help players move easily on the field. The screw tips dig into the ground and allows for quick step changes during the game. This is especially helpful when the grass is wet. The knee pads on the other hand protect the knees during tackles and also shields the quadriceps muscles. The hip pads defend the hip and tailbone on impact.

Professional football gear used by football players serves only one purpose which is protection. With the amount of physical strain a football player has to sustain, protective equipment such as official NFL helmets are necessary not only to abide with rules of the sport but also to provide maximum protection for the player. It will protect the player from the dangers of physical injury that the game can inflict.

Everybody knows that football is a physically intensive sport. It is anticipated that football players are ready to lunge into another player mercilessly while striving for that extra foot.
