The Grand National is one of the most popular horse races in the United Kingdom. Every years, millions of fans watch the Grand National. It is a very popular horse race, especially among those who don’t bet regularly on horse racing.

Grand National is notoriously known as one of the most difficult circuits in the entire world. Many horses (and even jockeys) have been injured or killed during the race. The high casualty rate is caused by the 30 severe fences that the horses have to jump over during the race. Each of the 30 fences (except for 2) will have to be jumped over twice during the race.

Usually, it is when jumps are taking place when accidents start to happen. Horses failing to clear jumps, horses stop and refuse to jump, horses fall and jockeys have to be remounted, etc. As you can see, almost anything can happen during the course of the race. A favorite horse may fail to complete the race due to a bad fall, thus giving another horse who is far behind a chance to catch up and snatch victory.

When you visit various online sites to read more about Grand National predictions, you will find loads of information being posted about the horses, the jockeys and the trainers. For ordinary horse races, such information matters a lot. Many people pick winning horses because they know a lot about the horses, the jockeys, and the trainers. Thus, they are able to make educated guesses about how the horses will perform. In addition, you can also check out past performance records. A horse who had previously won a race may have a good chance of winning the race again. Of course, having caught the attention of others after a previous win, the odds will not be that good.

Websites that offer great tips often include in depth analysis of all aspects of the horse that is being tipped. Every horse will have various strengths and weaknesses. It is up to the expert reviewers to expose all the strengths and weaknesses. Often, you may find these tips to be rather accurate!

However, there are people who prefer to bet purely for fun and leisure. In that case, you may wish to overlook all that in depth studies and follow your own intuition or gut feeling. You may also place bets based on the horse that you like bets. For instance, if you see a particular jockey or horse that you like, you can bet on the horse to show your support. That will make your cheering more meaningful.

Remember, the Grand National is unlike an ordinary horse race. Anything can happen. At the end of the day, luck matters. Just take a look at previous horse racing records. Even horses with 100 to 1 odds have managed to come in as a winner. How? By sheer luck of course!

Perhaps that’s why the Grand National is so popular among people who have no knowledge about horse racing whatsoever. They can win based purely on luck, and so can you!

Currently; how many of you will be not placing bets on the Grand National?
How many of you know and realise that it’s an unnecessary race?

Should the hedges be lowered and should it be banned?

Me. I don’t get any enjoyment from paying good money just to watch it get lost when some stupid horse don’t win a race. I may as well piss it up the wall as I’m guaranteed to get at least a small bit of pleasure from it. :-)

Sorry- I like most of your posts very much, but you are way of the mark here.

If the Horses hated it so much, why do they carry on Racing even when the Jockey has fallen off? Surely they would just stop!

Edit: but that happens in all forms of racing, and back in the late 70s/ early 80s they did reduce the size of the Aintree Fences, and quite rightly. It can also happen on the Flat as well, but as you know about Racing, you will know that all concerned- Owners, Trainers, Jockeys, Stable Lads, the lot- love their animals, and would not mistreat them in any way.

    Myself.

I have no interest in horse racing and make no exceptions for the Grand National.

Considering the number of horses raced to their deaths over the years, I think it borders on animal cruelty.

It is an abhorrent race and anyone placing a bet on the proceedings has the blood of dead horses on their hands and conscience. May they be forever hounded to the gates of hell for their blood money.

Im betting I think it brings the nation together and to appreciate a sport that we dont value much. The horses who fall are not shot thats just a foolish rumour. Its a difficult course and challenges both horse and rider, I enjoy it and it is your opinion that it is unneccessary however that is not a fact. My opinion is clearly the opposite.

Today is my annual lose a fiver day. Other than the lottery this is the only time I gamble.

From the sweepstakes at work I picked out "State of Play" but when I went to the bookies I chose "Butler’s Cabin". Mainly because I’d recently read a regency romance where the hero was called Butler.

If a horse didn’t want to do it it wouldn’t. I saw a wonderful photograph the other day of a jockey going over the one of the fences sans horse. I think that the jockey was okay.

I have never supported or ever liked the grand national as l disagree in the fences being to high and causing unnecessary injury and death to the horses and riders. I do understand that it is about stamina and the best horse and jockey wins. Yes the horses enjoys it, howver it is non the wiser what it is having to jump, reason being why you have refusals. They do it out of instinct and trust in the riders judgment, have you seen the HEIGHT of the hedges they have to jump. l think it is unnecessary, what difference would it make lowering the fences and preventing horses necks being broken, hearing the commentator say "what a shame" I have nothing against horse racing, l have been a horse owner in the past but l think the Grand National is pushing the horses that bit to far that it endangers its life and well being. The odds are to high for the horse.

Just got back from the bookies.
there have been years in the past when i refused to bet or watch the National until someone explained to me that these horses are bred to race and as ATC says if they didnt enjoy it why do they keep running??
I hate seeing the horses fall, but the National aint the only race where horses fall.

I won’t be. Hundreds of horses are killed each year via the horse-racing industry, plus I cannot bear to see the jockeys smacking them on the side to make them run faster – I’m sure we’d all run faster if someone did that to us, it doesn’t make it right though!

For any of you who don’t believe that horses are hurt in horse racing the following from the Animal Aid Charity website might be informative.

I will explicitly say that the video below from their website does NOT make for pleasant viewing.
